Waste Management
THEME: "THE UNTOLD STORIES OF WASTE MANAGEMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE"
DATE: 13 OCTOBER 2011
Keynote Speaker: Donna Paz T. Reyes, Ph.D. Executive Director
Environmental Studies Institute
The speaker expounded on the theme of this year's seminar, whereby the serious consequences of improper waste management were presented relative to climate change. The unusual disasters caused by typhoons in countries that were seldom hit in the past were alarming and the untold story was that they are in the level of "being prepared and well-equipped with emergency resources" but failed to respond since the magnitude of the disaster was underestimated.
The problem of the unsuppressed gas leak in Makati was well-profiled clearly by Engr. Ana Trinidad F. Rivera. Security has closed the affected areas since there is a possibility that the covered lot may disappear due to a raging fire.
Ms. Faye V. Ferrer presented how the government is continuously paying the Austrian government for the incinerators which were banned and no longer used due to the Clean Air Act. Ironically, some government officials are advocating for incineration of medical wastes which is considered inconceivable since the total impact is contributing to climate change.
Two (2) quizzes were conducted for the participants where the group winners were given P200.00 per game.
